How Storage has been replaced by Cloud and what are its Advantages and Disadvantages
Global DataSphere, which takes a measure of and analyzes the data that is created, replicated and captured in a year across the world, is expected to reach a staggering 175 ZB by 2025.
Think about the applications you use daily, the number of messages, images and videos you send and receive daily. It is beyond the comprehension of human mind to determine the amount of data that is generated by individuals and businesses alike.
Traditionally, as data increased, businesses opted for bulky local storages, larger capacity hard disks and external storage devices. However, the ever increasing amount of data that is created and processed every day has rendered these options greatly inadequate. Many businesses shifted from local storage to cloud to reduce the risk of data loss and the complexity of managing the data.
This major shift comes with its own share of advantages and disadvantage. Let us have a look at them.
Advantages of Cloud Storage
- Real-time Collaboration
Local storages meant that it wasn’t possible for more than one person to work on the same file. It had to be passed from hand to hand for any modification. Through cloud, multiple people can work on the same project at the same time, even across different countries.
- Reduced Risk of Data Loss
Working in local storage means constantly having to back up your data. A single device failure can cause you to lose an enormous amount of important information. When you create documents on cloud, your work is constantly saved. Moreover, you can access it from anywhere, depending upon the permission settings, eliminating the possibility of data loss due to device failure.
- Cost-Savings
Moving to the cloud saves your money involved in buying storage disks, per-GB cost and the electricity required to power these storage devices. By reducing on-premises hardware and software equipment, you can also save the cost required for the management and warranty services. Your administrators need not devote majority of their time for capacity planning and can focus on other important tasks.
Disadvantages of Cloud Storage
- Dependency on Internet Connection
As cloud storage is dependent on internet connection, accessing your files can prove difficult if you are on a slow network. If you are in a place without network connection, you will not be able to access your files altogether.
- Bandwidth Limitations
Depending on the service you have chosen, you might have limited bandwidth allowance. You can be charged extra if you exceed this bandwidth.
- Privacy Issues
As your data lives on the Internet, it can be left vulnerable to hacking attacks. There is a possibility that a malicious party can steal your sensitive data.
